Longtime Boston Globe sports columnist Bob Ryan weighs in on the proposed new Red Sox spring training stadium and the current state of the Southwest Florida economy. Ryan is a straight-shooter and calls this one as he sees it. Hard to argue that it is a terrible time for a wealthy private enterprise like the Red Sox to be hitting up the taxpayers of Lee County for a subsidy.

The Red Sox are a public relations and media savy organization. It wouldn’t surprise me that after spending the next month here in Southwest Florida and seeing the challenges up close, they will step up and change some of the parameters of the new stadium plan to improve their public perception in this deal.
