With the school year coming to a close, many parents are planning their family vacations with the kids. One of the most popular tourist destinations in the Fort Myers area is Sanibel Island. Sanibel is one of the best places to go for fun, relaxation, sparkling beaches and outdoor activities. As featured on the “Today Show,” Sanibel has been named the #1 Family-Friendly Vacation Destination in the United States by Family Fun magazine. The beautiful island off Florida’s Gulf Coast was voted No. 1 overall destination and noted the building code adds to the town’s charm because structures on the island cannot be taller than the palm trees! With no high-rises, Sanibel retains a quaint reputation.
The magazine surveyed 2,000 families who travel with kids’ ages 3-12 to name their favorite family vacation destinations. On the “Today Show,” an editor of Family Fun told hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb that Sanibel ranked #1 for families for its laid-back vibe, where families can hang out together. This town is also known for more than 250 varieties of seashells. The honor was announced May 7 during NBC’s “Today” morning show in a special segment. Sanibel scored its high marks by winning two categories in a reader’s poll: The best family-friendly vacation spot in the U.S. and the top tourist town. You can now find recognition of this honor on the Facebook page of the Sanibel-Captiva Chamber of Commerce, and the chamber’s website.
Sanibel has many family-friendly island-style restaurants that cater to kids, and is known for having outstanding dining options. One of the most popular choices is Island Cow Restaurant, providing a comfortable ambience and a fun menu that looks like a newspaper with a large number of selections. Lazy Flamingo Restaurant features kids’ meals that come in flying disks that they can use for play on the beach later. The Blue Giraffe Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner on colorful tables with an outdoor boardwalk great for people watching and an indoor cozy café.
