A beach tradition, the 57th Fort Myers Beach Shrimp Festival, is coming Saturday-Sunday, March 14 and 15 to this quaint Old Florida beach town. Known to locals as the beach’s biggest event, the Fort Myers Beach Lions Club is sponsoring the festival that kicks off with a 5k festival run on Saturday at 9 a.m., followed by the Shrimp Festival Parade.
Matanzas Pass Preserve offers free island guided nature walks. Two free guided walks led by trained volunteer naturalist guides, titled “Life in the Mangroves,” and “Exploring Ethnobotany,” are offered: the former every Thursday through March from 9:30-11 a.m., and the latter every fourth Wednesday of the month at the same time through March.
One of Florida’s top beaches, Lovers Key State Park is perfect for people who want to spend a day on a natural island that is also easy to access. Lovers Key gained its name as a popular courting destination for young lovers, before the construction of the Bonita Beach Causeway. Couples would travel to the island by boat and picnic, and enjoy its remote and solitary beach.
