In this era of expensive gasoline, ultra-long commutes from distant suburbs and an increased focus on walkability, Americans are fleeing suburbia for an urban lifestyle experience. Many of our nation’s great cities are experiencing a revitalization of their urban cores as more people move into them and create a new vibrancy. The Fort Myers area is also experiencing a growing interest in walkable urban neighborhoods. This is great news for those of us that don’t want to see the entire center of Florida between I-75 and I-95 paved over with new developments in the coming decades.
Our pockets of urban lifestyle neighborhoods include the Fort Myers River District which encompasses the waterfront high-rise developments like High Point Place and the Oasis as well as restored Downtown projects like Earnhardt Condominiums and Patio De Leon. Another River District urban gem is the Dean Park Historic District, one of Fort Myers’ early neighborhoods with many beautifully restored old Florida homes.
New urbanism has also been created in developments like the Residences at Coconut Point in Estero. This project features upscale condos constructed above ground-floor retail in the largest shopping mall in the area. This 290 condo development offers walking access to over 100 stores, 25 restaurants and even a movie theater. A similar residential over retail condo development called the Strada at Mercato is available in Naples.
An urban lifestyle option is also available in the Cape Coral CRA district. This area of Cape Coral located in the downtown section of the city offers walking access to many amenities including restaurants, clubs, a grocery store, fitness center, art galleries, medical facilities and parks.
